Food intolerance is when adverse effects occur after eating a certain food or food ingredient.

This is usually because the body does not produce enough of the particular chemical or enzyme that is needed for digestion of that food.

For example, a deficiency in lactase, the enzyme responsible for digesting milk, causes intolerance to milk.
